At the recent annual meeting for Diversified Crop Insurance Services, an auction was sponsored by Agrifinancial Services, the financial division of CGB Enterprises. The auction items varied from special high quality bourbons to trips with airfare. The items were donated by both Agrifinancial and CGB Enterprises, and the proceeds of the auction were sent to the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP).
The winners of the auction were a group of agents from the upper Midwest, including Gary and Mary Ihry of Ihry Insurance. The Ihry’s humbly made the donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in the name of a local hero, Eric Mewes, due to his service to his country and community.
Specialist Eric Mewes, a 2002 Hope-Page graduate, had only been in the Army for one year when he was deployed to Afghanistan. Two months into his stay, Mewes was riding in a military vehicle when a 200 pound bomb exploded under the vehicle.
The explosion shattered both of his legs and created other wounds to his lower body.
The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) mission is to honor and empower individuals who have been injured in the line of duty to our country. The Project works to raise awareness of the needs of our injured service members, help them work together, and then to create programs to help them with their needs. The Project is a national, non-partisan organization. Their headquarters are in Jacksonville, Florida. To learn more about how you can help, visit their website at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

Our annual crop insurance meetings are set for the last week in January 2014, and we’re pleased to announce that Stu Voigt, former Minnesota Vikings tight end, will be the headline speaker for the event. Stu’s speech, titled The Winning Edge, focuses on the “work hard, go far” mentality that you need to be successful in any career—whether it’s professional football, sales or farming.
Stu Voigt played 11 years with the Minnesota Vikings. He started in three Superbowls and finished his career as the Vikings all-time leading tight end receiver holding records in yardage, receptions and touchdowns. He was also a premiere blocking tight end. Voigt was named to the Vikings All-Time team in 1985 and in 2010 named as one of the 50 Greatest Vikings.
Voigt had an illustrious career at the University of Wisconsin where he lettered in football, baseball and track. He was the Badgers MVP in football in 1969 and is the Big 10’s last three sport letterman. Voigt was elected to the Wisconsin Hall of Fame in 2000. He received his BBA and Masters Degree from the UW where he majored in management.
Voigt is currently involved in the real estate and banking business in Minneapolis. He has worked in the broadcast industry as a commentator for Viking and Badger football since his retirement in 1980. Stu and his wife, Linda, currently live in Apple Valley, Minnesota.
The annual meeting is sponsored by Ihry Insurance to bring in regional experts to discuss the outlook on area crops for 2014 and beyond. Along with Voigt, we have three other speakers lined up to attend.
Area farmers and those interested in agriculture are invited to attend. This meeting is open to the public. Space is limited. If you have any questions, please contact our Hope office at 1-888-726-7929.
